Papers of Benjamin Joy relating to the voyage of the ship Eliza and the brig Rising Sun and the subsequent detainment of the Eliza in Montevideo, Uruguay, from 1801-1804. Dispatches to Benjamin Joy from his partner Joseph Russell, his brothers George and John Joy, and Joseph Morton discuss his efforts to win release of the Eliza. Correspondence includes a complaint addressed to Charles Pinckney, U.S. Minister to Spain; reports on Russell's dealings with the Viceroy and Governor at Montevideo; and updates on the spoilage of cargo. Josiah Gould, captain of the Rising Sun, writes to Russell reporting on his return from Mozambique with 86 slaves for the Brazil slave market. Papers from 1821-1823 concern the attempts to recover their losses under the provisions of the Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819. Correspondents include Alexander Bliss, John Gardiner, Benjamin Gotham, James Madison, and Daniel Webster.
